O Medovik is the first bakery in Rio de Janeiro dedicated to Eastern European cakes — and the home of medovik, the classic Russian honey cake. Voted Best Cake in Rio by Veja Comer & Beber 2024, we are in Ipanema, just a few blocks from the beach.

What is medovik?
Medovik is a traditional Russian cake made of paper-thin honey sponge layers filled with smetana, a lightly tangy sour cream. The result is soft, moist and only gently sweet — the honey is there, but never cloying. The name comes from myod (мёд), the Russian word for honey.
Legend says it was first baked in the 19th century for Empress Elizabeth Alexeievna, wife of Tsar Alexander I, who supposedly hated honey — until she tasted this cake. It became truly popular in Soviet times, and today it is a favourite across Russia and Eastern Europe.
